Healing through Shame and Limiting Beliefs

Date:

In our latest episode of The Aligned Life, we explored the topic of deservingness and how our self-limiting beliefs can shape our experiences. I wanted to dive deeper into this here, focusing on some of the key insights we discussed and how they can help us step into our authentic selves.

Healing through Shame and Limiting Beliefs

1. Identifying Self-Limiting Beliefs

There are three major limiting beliefs I see people struggle with regularly:

  1. “You can’t have it both ways.”
  2. “Half a loaf is better than none.”
  3. The sneaky one: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Let’s talk about that third belief because it can be particularly tricky. While it sounds positive, it often traps us in people-pleasing tendencies. It creates unrealistic expectations that others will treat us as we treat them—and that’s not always how the world works. This mindset can lead to tolerating behavior that doesn’t honor our needs or values.

2. The Cycle of Shame and Self-Blame

These beliefs can perpetuate a cycle of shame, contempt, and insecurity. When we tolerate negative behaviors or accept less than we deserve, resentment builds up. This, in turn, leads to self-blame and shame. I know firsthand how hard it can be to break free from this cycle. But here’s the key: recognize that these limiting beliefs are not who you are. They are simply stories we’ve internalized.

3. Navigating the Emotional Landscape

Our emotions are just energy, either drawing us toward something or pushing us away. I’ve learned that paying attention to these emotional cues can guide us toward our true selves. When you’re feeling something strongly, ask yourself: “Is this emotion moving me toward something that resonates with my authentic self, or is it pushing me away?”

4. The Power of Authenticity and Boundaries

Standing in my own authenticity has been one of the most empowering changes in my life. By setting clear boundaries and differentiating between my true needs and the projected preferences of others, I began to let go of shame and embrace my own worthiness. Deservingness doesn’t come from what you do or achieve—it comes from simply being who you are.

Final Thoughts

My hope is that this post serves as a reminder that your self-worth and deservingness come from within. Identifying and releasing self-limiting beliefs, setting boundaries, and standing in your truth can help you navigate away from shame and step into your true empowerment.
